Study In Australia University Of South Australia

Studying @ CELUSA / University of South Australia

When you arrive in Adelaide, you will be met at the Adelaide airport by either the International Students Coordinator (Accommodation), or your host family. You will then be taken to your new address and shown how to get to CELUSA.

An orientation day program is run for new students starting at CELUSA at the beginning of each module. On your first day you will be given a 'Welcome to CELUSA' orientation package with information about CELUSA programs, staff, facilities, safety issues, and some useful maps. You will also be introduced to the International Students Coordinator and Senior Counsellor who are able to assist you if any concerns arise during your time at CELUSA.

During orientation day you will be given a placement test, so we can place you in the class that will maximise your learning opportunites. On the first day of each module we provide a welcome lunch for all new students, following the placement test. This is a great opportunity to meet your teachers and fellow students.

On day two you will begin regular lessons in the class you have been allocated to. Class lists are posted outside reception. That afternoon you will be given a computer orientation session and provided with a new email address.

Students who complete a full module (5 weeks) receive a certificate of achievement, which outlines how many weeks they have studied at CELUSA, and their English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. At the end of every term (10 weeks) a farewell party is held for all students.

Programs and Fees

CELUSA offers a number of programs to provide students with the ideal study environment and experience for their needs.

  • CELUSA University Entrance Certificate (UEC) to directly enter UniSA programs
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to prepare for academic studies and international language tests
  • English for Business Communication (EBC) to improve fluency, communication and knowledge in the international business environment
  • General Intensive English (GIE) to improve fluency and communication in everyday life and situations

CELUSA UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE CERTIFICATE (UEC)

CELUSA's UEC provides students with an alternative English language level assessment method with some great advantages. This two-level certificate progam is especially designed for students planning to continue on to undergraduate or postgraduate study in the University of South Australia (UniSA). After successfully completing Level Two of the UEC, students are accepted for entry into undergraduate and postgraduate progams without having to take a formal IELTS or TOEFL exam.

The UEC progam is a specialised 10 or 20 week program and focuses on developing the specialist writing, reading, speaking and listening skills used in university study. In addition, students also learn how to plan and independently manage their own academic work. There is no formal exam at the end of the progam, but in order to graduate, students must successfully complete a number of academic assignments at the required grade. Students can incorporate work from their area of intended study into assignments thus improving their subject knowledge as well as their English language skills. This approach increases students' chances of success at university by preparing them for the real demands of university study.

To enter the 20 week program, a student must be assessed by CELUSA as being at the level of IELTS 5.0 (or TOEFL 500). To enter the 10 week level Two program, a student must be assessed by CELUSA as being at the level of IELTS 5.5 (or TOEFL 525).

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

EAP progams are usually offered in 10 week terms at intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced levels. The higher levels focus on academic English skills such as essay writing, summarising, notetaking and giving presentations while the lower level develops the skills necessary to complete these tasks. EAP courses prepare students for entry into the advanced level CELUSA courses and the UEC progam. Students who wish to study at a university which requires the IELTS test should study in the advanced level EAP progam, which includes IELTS preparation.

ENGLISH FOR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION (EBC)

The EBC option is a higher level general communication course with opportunities to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for key business situations such as presentations, telephoning, writing reports and attending meetings. Oral and written business presentations and task-based interactive learning form important components of the course and assist in developing individual and group communication skills. The Australian and international business scene are included in studies.
EBC course dates are the same as the GIE course schedule.

GENERAL INTENSIVE ENGLISH (GIE)

GIE commences at lower level and continues through to advanced. Each 10-week progam is taught in two 5-week modules. The courses provide intensive practice in the skills used daily by English speakers and are taught using a communicative teaching methodology. Class activities are aimed at developing areas of language required, for example, in face-to-face and group conversation, preparing and giving a variety of short presentations, discussions, creative writing and reports, and tasks associated with comprehension and specific skills development. The progams also include lessons in Australian culture and slang. Students in the GIE program go on to use English for many purposes, including travelling, working and socialising.
