AUSTRALIANS - STEREOTYPE OR REALITY?

Known for embracing democracy and opening its doors to the world, Australia has settled as a land of variety and possibilities to those who inhabit it. With almost 30 % of the population born overseas, it is clear that the country has a remarkable level of acceptance towards everyone regardless of background. This level of tolerance has made Aussies some of the best hosts around the world, particularly for tourists and visitors. On top of that, their positive attitude in life and cheerful treatment make Australians a nice companion when they are around.

Australians pride themselves on their multiculturalism and “fair-go” emblem, which is reflected on the Equal Opportunity Legislation, strong public health and education, and the state governments’ recognition of the importance of all cultures. Despite these democratic principles and values, many argue that those egalitarian truths are just a myth and that such reputation is unrealistic for some immigrants and also locals who try to cope with divisions in economy and society.

Nevertheless, visitors and locals agree that Australian’s informality , easy going behaviour and sense of humour are charming and even entertaining for those who admire complacency, humility and a relaxed treatment; but no so interesting for the refined visitor who may perceive Australians as careless and laconic thanks to the use of colloquialism, strine talk and irreverence.

Although Australia is a country of contrast and social complexity, not easy to stereotype, a common description of a typical Aussie describes him as a casual and laid-back individual who is comfortable with an outdoor lifestyle influenced by BBQs, the coastline and a great passion for sports. In most cases, this character would be proud of his country and its core values, culture and economic success; he would create an atmosphere around him where tension and tightness dissipate. There are exceptions, though, and the visitor is advised to respect Australia’s national pride and values and be prepared to deal with jargon that can be misunderstood and make communication more difficult.

Apart from a carefree state of mind, one of the most valued attributes of the Australian citizen is his sense of self achievement, which makes visitors think that locals are always ready to have a go and try their best despite adversity. Aussies, in turn, admire the perseverance of others and seriously reject arrogance and disrespect for their nation’s achievements.

An Aussie is, then, an easy to approach person who finds many reasons to enjoy life within his/her country. He/she acts with grace and confidence with such openness that leaves the feeling of a tolerant mind, responsive to new experiences, ideas and individuals.
